TYPOGRAPHY Distorted 3D Type

Minggu, 09 Maret 2014

Continuing with my article on 3D TYPE and 3D TYPOGRAPHY, I will now started to explore the possibilities in creating some of the concepts.

DISTORTING 3D TYPE
How would you distorted 3D Text? The most obvious features of Blender I would use would be: Displace Modifier and Texture Displacement. Those two will be the main consideration. Additional layer of bump map and normal map can also further enchance it.

Manually distorting the shape by pushing and pulling vertex or by sculpting is also something to be considered. In such case, you look into Multiresolution Modifier. Do Remesh Modifier beforehand.

REMESH MODIFIER
For this purpose, I gotta mention another "coming soon" feature of Blender to keep your eyes on called: Remesh Modifier, this additional modifier helps in creating more even surface mesh bricker divisions, which means when you distorted a surface or do some dynamics, or perhaps fracturing, you can get a better representation for the surface.

I will use Blender version with Remesh Modifier because that is the best scenario:

1. Once Remesh Modifier applied, the mesh is perfect and ready to be distorted. You can keep Remesh Modifier alive while adding Displace Modifer on top.

2. First level of distortion will be using Displace Modifer. I like using Displace Modifier, it is probably of my favourite and it is extremely useful. With Displace Modifier, as you may already know, you are displacing the surface of mesh using texture procedurally. You could see the result right away on screen live and it is also interactive. Below are some example result using different procedural texture in Blender. No UV is needed if you use "Generated" Mapping and procedural texture. You can of course use your own texture based on photograph or probably baked manually.

Realtime: Cloud Perlin

Realtime: Wood

Realtime: Voronoi Crackle
3. On top of that Displace Modifier effect, you can then add more details by using Displacement Map, Bump Map, and Normal Map as needed. These will be applied at render time and you get really nice details at high resolution. Mixing and layering of textures is great way to give more natural organic result.

Render result with displacement.

And thats how you distort 3D Text Object and create DISTORTED 3D TYPE. Simple and easy.

If you want to add color and texture on top of all this with certain material, it will also add to the look, but the distortion is basically it.

And ONE MORE THING, this effect is of course animate-able and can be combined with Dynamic Paint.
